Who Jesus Is…
“The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of
his being…” (Heb. 1:3)
“Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart
for the gospel of God — the gospel he promised beforehand through his
prophets in the Holy Scriptures regarding his Son, who as to his earthly
life was a descendant of David, and who through the Spirit of holiness
was appointed the Son of God in power by his resurrection from the dead:
Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Rom. 1:1-4)
In the last post, we talked a little about Jesus being both fully human
and fully God. We also talked a little about the first and last Adam, and
about Jesus being God manifest in the flesh (1 Tim. 3:16 KJV).
Let’s see who else Jesus is…who he was before he was the flesh…
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word
was God.” (John 1:1)
Jesus was the Word of God before he became the flesh of God. When God
created everything back in Genesis 1, He simply spoke, and it became so.
How?
“By the word of the Lord the heavens were made…” (Ps. 33:6)
Which backs up John 1:3
“Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has
been made.”
Jesus was the Word of God, and by him and through him everything that is,
was created and held together. Then, at the appointed time, he became the
flesh of God…so that he could redeem the fallen world from the clutches
of darkness.
Just like there are three “parts” of you, your body, mind and spirit, there
are three “parts” of God…the body, mind and spirit! Check out Gen. 1:26..
“Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness…”
Who was he talking to? The “mind” of God was speaking to the Word, who became
the flesh…and to the Spirit.
“For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man’s spirit within
him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.”
(1 Cor. 2:11)
God, the Father (the mind of God) conceives it, God the Son (or the Word that
became flesh, aka Jesus) carries it out, and the God the Holy Spirit (the Spirit
of God) gives it life!
There is only one God, folks. One. But He, like us (as we are created in His
image) has three different parts that makes the One. Why did Moses write this?
“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.” (Deut. 6:4)
Because Moses knew something that we find hard to grasp sometimes. God the Father,
God the Son and God the Holy Spirit are all one God. Is Jesus God? Yes…but he
is the Word of God and the flesh of God. He is not the mind, nor the Spirit of God,
anymore than your flesh is your mind or spirit.
The mind of God demands justice when we sin. The flesh of God has provided that
justice so that you and I don’t have to face the wrath of the mind of God someday.
The mind of God demands punishment for our sins. The flesh of God has taken that
punishment on himself so that we don’t have to face it.
There’s so much more that could be said here, but for now, we’ll end with this
question. Why would God demand justice and punishment and take it out on Himself?
Because God so loved the world….

“So it is written: “The first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam, a life-giving spirit.” 1 Cor. 15:45

We left off the last lesson with the above verse. Adam, the first man became a living being. Jesus…the last Adam. A life-giving spirit.

To understand who Jesus is, first we have to understand who Adam was. He was the first and only man created by God…created a perfect being and placed in a perfect world. If you’ll take a look at the first three chapters of Genesis, you’ll see that Adam is the guy that ate the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden. By doing so, sin entered the world, and the perfect man, along with the perfect creation, became a fallen man in a fallen world.

Before we get too far along this trail, let’s take another look at who Jesus is, according to what we’ve learned so far. First, he is fully human. His mother was a woman, just like any other, except for the fact that she was a virgin. He wasn’t some sort of hybrid or mutant, he was a human being through and through. Just like you and me.

His Father was and is God. So, just as Jesus is fully human, he is also fully God. Jesus was born without the sin nature that the rest of us have running through our genes, because his Dad was not from the same lineage as our forefather, Adam. It is his Father’s DNA that ensured he was born without the sin “gene” that Adam passed on to the rest of us.

Keep in mind that there are only two people directly put here on Earth by God…Adam and Jesus. Adam was disobedient in eating the forbidden fruit and as a result all of creation fell, as it was all under his dominion (Gen. 1:26,28).
Jesus, on the other hand, was “obedient to death—even death on a cross!” (Phil. 2:8). Because of his obedience, just as Adam’s disobedience caused all of creation to fall into sin, Jesus provided redemption for all of creation (Rom. 5:12,17,19).

Just to be sure there’s no misunderstanding here, while redemption has been provided for all of creation, that doesn’t mean all of creation will accept that redemption. It is there and available, but it is not forced upon us. It is up to us to decide whether or not to remain a son of Adam, or to become a son of Jesus (John 1:12,13).

Aside from being the last Adam, the one who redeemed creation from the sin of the first Adam, let’s take a look at some of the other aspects of who Jesus is.

Jesus said, “I and the Father are one.” (John 10:30)

“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.” (Col. 1:15)

In other words, Jesus is God wrapped up in skin and bones so that we can see him with our human eye. Which is why Timothy made this statement:

“…God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.” (1 Tim. 3:16 KJV)

Jesus is God in human form. Just as you…the real you…the you inside your body…just as you have a bodily form, God took on a bodily form. You have to understand that your body is not where your “life” is. Your body is simply a home for your “life” that allows the rest of us to see you and interact with you. Same with God. The “life” of God took on a human body so the rest of us could see and interact with him…and that human body had the name of Jesus, just as your body is called by your name.

Understanding that Jesus is simply God in the flesh, let’s see who else Jesus is…

In chapter 3 of Exodus, Moses asked God His name and God replied:

“God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”  (Ex. 3:14)

What did He mean by that? I Am who I Am….

First of all, He is not “I Was”…or “I Will Be”. He is “I AM”. Right now. In the present. Of course, He is also in the past and future, but the important thing is that He Is…right now. This moment. The last moment is gone, and the next has yet to arrive. You and I don’t need an “I Was”. We may or may not need an “I Will Be” because we may or may not be in the next moment.

What we need is an “I Am”. Which is great, because that’s what we have!

The next thing is that we all have similar, but different needs because we are individual people with individual lives. What does that mean? It means this:

I Am your Healer, for those who need healing.

I Am your Provider, for those who need provision.

I Am your Savior, for those who need salvation.

I Am your Protector, for those who need a protector.

I Am your Life, for those who desire life.

I Am your Redeemer, for those who need redemption.

I Am your Strength, for those who are weak.

I Am the Way, for those seeking a path…

I Am the Truth, for those seeking truth…

I Am your Comforter, for those who need comfort…

I Am your Friend, for those who need a friend…

I Am your Father, for those who need a father…

Whatever your need may be, you have an “I AM”. The thing is, we all have the same needs, we just have them at different times along the way. Regardless of what you need or when you need it, you have an “I AM”. That “I AM” is Jesus.

Did you ever realize that the “world” and the kingdom of God came into being in the exact same way? It may be worded a little differently in the Bible, but they both came into existence in the same way. Let’s take a look, shall we? Keep in mind that the “world” was established on earth, while the “kingdom of God” was established in the world!

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Gen. 1:1

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.” John 1:1-3

They both say what? That in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. John 1:1-3 simply expands it a little to include that they were created through Jesus, who was with God and who was God.

“Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” Gen. 1:2

It was on this formless, empty, dark planet that God placed his world when he created Adam. Adam fell, and along with him so did the rest of mankind. But watch this…

“In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.” John 1:4,5

What does it say? That the “world” was full of darkness. The world of Adam. Dark, empty and formless, even though it was crawling with mankind.

“And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.” Gen.  1:3

God provided light to the dark planet. Then, 4000 years later, He provided light to the dark world. Once again, God said, “Let there be light” and “unto us a child is born..” (Isaiah 9:6). A child in whom was life…and that life was the light of men. A child whose light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.” John 1:14

It’s interesting that: “…the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.” Gen. 2:7

Just as centuries later, He would breathe the breath of life into the nostrils of the lifeless body of the crucified Jesus…

It’s interesting that God decided it would be good for Adam to have a helper (Gen. 2:18), so He took a rib from Adam’s side, and from it, created Eve (Gen.2:21,22).

“The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’for she was taken out of man.” For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.” (Gen. 2:23,24)

It’s also interesting that Jesus, like Adam, sacrificed his flesh in order to give his own bride the gift of life:

“Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready.” Rev. 19:17

It’s interesting that God told Adam and Eve to “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” Gen. 1:28

And it’s interesting that the disciples of Jesus were told “…you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)     Why? So that the Christian faith could be fruitful and increase in number! It’s interesting, too that “God placed all things under his (Jesus) feet and appointed him to be head over everything…” Eph. 1:22

Last, but not least, isn’t it interesting that Jesus was referred to as “the last Adam”?

“So it is written: “The first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam, a life-giving spirit.” 1 Cor. 15:45

There are only two Adams. There are only two worlds. Each of us is a descendant of one Adam or the other…either of the first, or the last. We each are citizens of only one world, though we may visit the other from time to time. We are citizens of either the world of the first Adam…or we are citizens of the world of the last Adam. We belong to the world, or to the kingdom of God….

Just a quick simple recap: In the past two lessons we learned that God created the earth, which is the planet we live on. With the creation of Adam, the “world” came into existence ON earth. You and I live IN the world ON earth. (I know some of this may seem rather simplistic to some of you, but if you’ll kindly bear with me…) :)

For roughly 4000 years, the world of mankind existed alone on earth. Then, along came Jesus. As we know, he was crucified, and just as God breathed the breath of life into Adam, He breathed the breath of life into the lifeless body of Jesus. The first breath the resurrected Jesus took was the first breath of a new “world” on earth…the kingdom of God. Now we have two worlds on earth. That of Adam, and that of the kingdom of God.

If you would kindly tuck that thought away for awhile, we’ll come back to it, but for now, let’s take a look at some interesting points between Adam and Jesus…and between the creation of the two worlds…the world of Adam, and the kingdom of God.

First of all, Adam was created a perfect being. Jesus was born a perfect being. Adam was the only person ever created by God. Jesus was the only person born of God.

When I say that, it goes without saying that God “created” each of us as individuals as we were being formed in our mother’s womb (Job 31:15, Is. 49:5, Jer. 1:5). But with the exception of Adam, every person who has ever lived, Jesus included, was born by the process of childbirth.

With Adam being the only man created by God, and Jesus being the only man born of God, those two men, in a sense are the only two men in the entire history of mankind that can legitimately be called the sons of God. Adam and Jesus.

Adam was created without sin. He was tempted by the devil and failed. Jesus was born without sin, was tempted by the devil and, as we know, withstood the temptations.

So, here we have the two sons of God. Both came into the world as perfect beings, though Adam would later fall. It should be noted, that all of us are given life in the world of Adam. It’s impossible for one to enter the world of the kingdom of God without first having life in the fallen world of Adam, simply because without having life in Adam’s world, you don’t exist! The issue is whether or not we remain in Adam’s world…

As Adam and Jesus are the only two sons of God, every single one of us is the offspring of either one or the other. We are each born into this world as fallen Adams. Jesus, himself, was born into this fallen world before the second “world”, the kingdom of God, was established. Each of us is either a child of Adam, and are in a fallen world, or we are a child of Jesus and have access to the kingdom of God. There is no in between.

Those of us who are a child of Jesus are in the difficult position of living in both worlds at the same time. While we have access to the kingdom of God, we may not necessarily be living in the kingdom of God. Or, we may hop and skip from living in one world at times, to living in the other at other times…because the world of the kingdom of God was established within the world of Adam.

At times they can be very difficult for us to separate. There are no physical barriers to separate them. Had the kingdom of God been established BESIDE the world of Adam, things might be different. But it wasn’t. It was established WITHIN the world of Adam.

Everyone who has ever lived has lived in the world of Adam. But not all citizens of Adam’s world will live in the kingdom of God. Still, one must be a son of Adam before one can become a son of Jesus…

We’ve learned that the earth and the world are two
different things. Now we’re going to learn another quick little tidbit
that we’ll need to know as things move along.
The world was in place for about 4000 years before the birth of
Jesus. It grew and thrived all alone, here on planet Earth. Now, just
as the creation of Adam gave birth to the “world”, Jesus also ushered
in a new “world”. That world is referred to in the Bible as “the
kingdom of God”.
So now, on Earth, we have two “worlds”. We have the “world” that
was “born” when Adam was created, and the “kingdom of God”
which was “born” through Jesus. There is, however, something
interesting to be noted here. Whereas the world came into existence
with the first breath of Adam, the kingdom of God did NOT come
into existence with the earthly birth of Jesus.
Rather, the kingdom of God was established at the moment of his
resurrection. Or, with the first breath he took after his death. Just as
Adam’s first breath was a supernatural act of God, so was the first
breath Jesus took after the crucifixion. While his earthly birth was
supernatural in the sense that a virgin bore a child, on the other hand,
it was also a birth just like any other. A woman gave birth to a baby!
But the first breath he took after his death? That was supernatural!
God breathed the life back into the body of Jesus, just as he had
breathed the life into the pile of dirt that became Adam! THAT was
the beginning of the new “world” we call the “kingdom of God”! It’s
interesting that both worlds began in exactly the same way! There’s
more to tell, but first, let’s look at a few verses…
“After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming
the good news of God. “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom
of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!” Mark
14:14,15
Jesus knew the kingdom of God was near. It wasn’t HERE, but it
was NEAR.
“And he said to them, “Truly I tell you, some who are standing
here will not taste death before they see that the kingdom of God has
come with power.” Mark 9:1
The first thing to note here, is that the kingdom of God had not yet
come. Jesus said, “Some who are standing here will not taste death
before they see that the kingdom of God has come with power.” As
he was speaking, the kingdom was near, but had not yet arrived.
The second thing to notice is this: It goes without saying that every
single one of the people that Jesus was talking to that day, has since
tasted death. Not one of them remains alive on earth today. Yet they
lived long enough to see the kingdom of God come with power. In
other words, the kingdom of God is not something that is coming
SOMEDAY. It’s something that is already HERE. It came with the
resurrection of Jesus!
“Truly I tell you, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine
until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.” Mark
14:25
At the last supper, Jesus proclaimed that he wouldn’t drink from
the fruit of the vine again, until the day he drank it new in the
kingdom of God. He was then crucified and was bodily resurrected
on the third day. His first breath established the “new world” of the
kingdom of God.
“Once, having been asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of
God would come, Jesus replied, “The kingdom of God does not
come with your careful observation, nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’
or ‘There it is,’ because the kingdom of God is within you.” Luke
17:20,21
The kingdom of God is within you. Let’s look at this a minute.
“Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ.
He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in

God set his seal of ownership on us and put his Spirit in our
hearts…or in other words, “within” us. In the kingdom.

not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.” 2 Cor. 3:3
Tablets of human hearts. Within us.
“For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his
light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of
God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.” 2 Cor. 4:6
Again, within us.
“I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with
power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may
dwell in your hearts through faith…” Eph. 3:16,17
“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts…” Col. 3:15

To begin this study, I need to recap just a little bit on some of the things that
have already been covered. If you’d like to take a browse, feel free to sign up

the archives. Most, if not all, of the recapped information, as well as the basis
for these beliefs, can be found somewhere within the postings there.
In this particular study, we’ll be taking a look at the book of Genesis from
what I hope is a different and unique perspective for many of you. I don’t
want to take the time to re-hash the creation, the fall and all that, simply
because you can find it somewhere on the website already, if you have a
desire to do so.
The thing we DO need to recap, though, is this:
God created the earth. The earth is the planet on which we live. Simple
enough. Now here’s where you need to understand what’s being said. The
earth is the planet on which we live. So far, so good…
God created Adam. With the creation of Adam, came the birth of the
“world.” The “world” is NOT the planet on which we live. The “world” is
what lives on the planet. It is mankind and the human “system” of living.
For instance:
“Now the whole world had one language and a common speech.” Gen.
11:1
The WORLD had one language and a common speech. The world of
mankind. The world that lived on Earth.
“And all the world came to Egypt to buy grain from Joseph, because the
famine was severe everywhere.” Gen. 41:57
Who came to by grain? The WORLD. The people of Earth.
Now, it’s really not my intent to run this thing into the ground, but it’s very
important to understand that the earth is the planet, and the world is the
system of life that lives upon the planet. They are two different things. You
and I make up the world that lives on the planet.
“For the foundations of the earth are the Lord’s; on them he has set the
world.” 1 Sam. 2:8
See? The foundations of the earth are the Lord’s. On those foundations, he
has set the “world.” Two separate things.
“Who appointed him over the earth? Who put him in charge of the whole
world?” Job 34:13
Again, two different things. The earth and the world.
“The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in
it…” Psalm 24:1
“The heavens are yours, and yours also the earth; you founded the world
and all that is in it.” Psalm 89:11
How about this one? Did God so love the earth that he gave his only
begotten Son? Or did God so love the WORLD?
It’s important to realize that they are two separate entities. One is the planet
on which we live, while the other is the system that lives on the planet. This
is the first lesson! :)

I have often failed myself. Many times, I have failed my family and
friends…and mostly, of course, I have failed my God. That’s only one of the
many reasons I’m grateful that I have a God that provided a Savior for my
shortcomings!
I’ve tried to give a lot of thought to the overwhelming task of sharing this
Savior with you, and find myself being pulled in so many directions, it’s a
little difficult to stay on track. The one thing I’d like to share with you right
off the bat is this: Jesus is real.
I know there are many who would disagree, and that’s fine. My purpose
isn’t to argue or shove my beliefs down anyone’s throat. My purpose, rather,
is to share with you some of the things that he has shared with me. As far as
whether or not YOU believe Jesus was (or is) real, it really doesn’t matter.
His existence does not hinge on your belief. Don’t mean for it to sound so
crude, but…
The sun is shining here today, as I write this. You are free to believe that,
or to call it rubbish…but it does not change the fact that the sun is shining
here today. The same is true of Jesus, and also of God. You are free to believe
they are real, and you are free to believe they are not real. Neither will
change the fact of their being.
If you care to follow along, it’s quite possible that as you attempt to learn
more about Jesus, or as you attempt to disprove his existence, you may come
to realize, if you’re not careful, that he’s a lot more real than either of us can
understand.
Either way, it will be a fascinating journey filled with unexpected surprises
and a great deal of food for thought…for believers and non-believers alike!
I decided to put this in pdf format for a few reasons. One being that it will
be a simple matter for you to download and save this series of messages,
should you choose to do so.
I originally began a study on the book of Genesis, but found that
attempting to go through Genesis in the traditional manner offered too many
distractions to keep me focused. So, while it is still an interesting study, I

grasp on here. First of all, as most of us know, when Adam ate the forbidden
fruit, sin became a part of his nature…part of his DNA, you might say….and,
as such, it was passed on to his children…and from them to their children…
and so on, down to this very day with us and our own children.

The second thing we need to understand is this: When Adam was created,
something happened here on earth. With Adam’s first breath, the “world” came
into existence. Not the earth, which, of course was already here…but the “world”.
They are two very different and distinct things! The earth is the planet on which
the world lives and thrives. The world, of course, is the entity that lives on the
earth…the people, the systems, the cultures, etc.

For instance, with the creation of Adam, came the first social system, even though
he was entirely alone for a period of time. With Eve, that system expanded. As
time went on, the world developed educational systems, religious systems,
economic systems, medical systems and so forth, until we have the beast that
exists today.

As we know, Adam was given dominion over the earth. At that time, before the
fall, he also had dominion over his tiny world. It was his baby to raise any way
he saw fit. The entire world, and it’s future was in his hands. Adam, himself, was
responsible for the direction the world would take, just as he was responsible for
tending the garden and naming the animals. When he ate the forbidden fruit, he gave
dominion of his birthright (dominion of the earth and world) over to that crafty
ol serpent…just exactly like Esau gave his birthright to Jacob for a bowl of stew
(Gen. 25:33)!

Jesus, himself, calls Satan “the prince of this world” in John 12:31 (and again in
14:30, and once more in 16:11). How did that ol snake end up with it? He stole
it from Adam while he had his face buried in that forbidden fruit! Adam handed
it to him on a silver platter…and it’s belonged to the fallen Lucifer ever since.

It’s important to put a distinction between the earth and the world. As time goes
by, we’ll look at a few verses that verify this claim. There’s an awful lot of stuff
coming down the road that hinges on your understanding of this simple concept.

“The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it…”
(Psalm 24:1)

The earth is the Lord’s. So is the world and all who live in it. God owns it all.
But he also saw fit to give dominion (not ownership, but rulership) of them to
Adam as a gift. Adam, in turn gave them over to Satan for a taste of the fruit.

Remember 2 Peter 3:6?

“By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed..”

The world, as WE know it, has never been destroyed. It came close in Noah’s
time, but the world survived through Noah and his sons. There was a world,
on earth, though, that WAS destroyed…the world that was before Adam!

We don’t know much about that world, but we really don’t need to know. It
wasn’t for us…it was for them. What we do need to know, God has given us.
He created the earth. He created Adam. Adam fell (and gave his birthright
to the devil). God gave us Jesus to redeem us from our fallen state…THAT’S
what we need to know about OUR world…
