FREEDOM IN CHRIST
This is gonna be so neat!! This post is designed to deal specifically with one type of wealth that each of us as individuals can have…in fact, we already possess some degree of it. Before you allow the thought to enter your mind that this is just a way out of teaching you about financial freedom, I urge you to read the post first…lol. I fully intend to share with you, some of the reasons that many of us have struggled in the area of finances…but for the moment, I would like to concentrate specifically on wealth. But this is a wealth of a different kind…
I’d like to share a passage with you that applies nicely to what you’re about to read. It also applies to your finances, so you’ll see it again soon. Please take a moment to absorb it’s wisdom.
“But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your forefathers, as it is today.” (Deut. 8:18).
Neither of us can do anything without the Lord. That includes producing or creating wealth. The sooner we realize the truth of this statement, the sooner we can begin to amass our wealth, which in this particular post, may seem to be a rather unconventional wealth…but it’s the most important wealth there is. It’s the wealth Jesus died for on the cross.
A little about the flip side of wealth…
“Man is a mere phantom as he goes to and fro: He bustles about, but only in vain; he heaps up wealth, not knowing who will get it.” (Ps. 39:6)
“For all can see that wise men die; the foolish and the senseless alike perish and leave their wealth to others.” (Ps. 49:10)
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.” (Matt. 6:19)
There are a lot of other verses we could take a look at, but for the moment, these are more than enough. You’ve likely heard the expression that no one has ever seen a hearse pulling a U-haul…or that you can’t take it with you when you go. Let’s think about our wealth for a moment. During this life, our treasures are subject to an awful lot…damage, theft, destruction. But don’t stop there. Let’s think about our lives…and our passing from this world. What WILL we take with us? We won’t take our houses, our cars or our money. But look how dearly we hang onto those things while we’re here! Like they will really make a difference when we’re gone! And all that stuff we accumulated through the years is going to be left to someone else or tossed in the trash.
We came into this world naked and without any possessions at all, other than the skin that covered the bones we were born with. And we’ll leave with even less. When we leave this world, we won’t even take our skin and bones with us! That stuff is going six feet under, to return to the dust of the ground. We will leave with NOTHING! And there is NOTHING that we can take with us…no money, no homes, no cars, no cute t-shirts with funny sayings, no flip-flops or cellphones…no NOTHING! We can’t even take a snack to nibble on along the way. There is NOTHING that we can take with us when we leave this world!
Or is there?
When you stop to give it a little thought, there really is one thing we can take with us. That one lone thing should serve as a guide as to the wealth we should be trying to amass during our brief stay here on earth. What is that one thing? What is the one thing that God will allow us to bring into His presence when we enter? Other people. Go back to Matt. 6 and look at verse 20. What do ya suppose Jesus was talking about?
“But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.” (Matt. 6:20)
How do we store up treasures in heaven? By taking the one thing God will allow us to bring with us…other people. Keep in mind, if you will, Matt. 6:21:
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Where does your heart lie? What kind of wealth are you creating and building in this life? Where do you keep your treasures? Are they the kind you can take with you? Or the kind that must be left behind…to go to someone else once you’re gone? Now, granted, it’s better to get to heaven broke than to not get to heaven…. but think of how awesome it would be to have a few treasures waiting for you when you get there!!
We can all prosper. We’ve all been given that promise by God. He has given us the power to produce wealth. What we do with it is up to us as individuals.
